This Aluminum Metal Sign Won't Be Crushed Against Your Head

You may have seen it on television or in a movie; some character insists upon smashing an aluminum beverage can against their head (ouch!) and the material crunches from 5 inches right down to 2 in a single swift whack. This particular scene often leads people to think aluminum isn't as sturdy as it truly is. But it's all about the grade of thickness - and drink cans aren't that heavy and tough, but an aluminum metal sign is!

So what on earth does "grade of thickness" mean?

For instance, a single, small real-estate sign you generally see on display in yards is made of an individual metal sheet that has a .040" grade of thickness.

While pretty lightweight, this grade offers the same quality as thicker grades in toughness, weather resistance and design capabilities. Plus, you can easily pick your sign up and place it directly into another yard without straining your back. If you do not have to move your sign around regularly or plan on mounting it, a thicker grade of aluminum would be better to use in for your custom metal sign.

The next step up is just a few "grades" away!

Larger metal signs typically call for a thicker gauge of aluminum. These larger signs usually aren't built to stand alone but to be attached to flat areas such as an inside wall in your business or outdoors in an area with little traffic. Most sign companies offer aluminum grades up to .083". Despite the fact that this is still relatively thin, your metal sign will not flex, warp or be crushed by with your head!

Is there anything stronger than a .083" grade metal sign?

Certainly there is! For bigger made to order aluminum signs that will be hung in between two standing posts or even placed on top of your company building, we suggest one of the following aluminum-based sign materials.

* ARMOUR-Wood: This is the most robust aluminum-based metal sign material currently available, and the name says it all. ARMOUR-Wood is a 1/2" piece of plywood sandwiched and sealed between 2 aluminum panels. Now that is one durable sign!

* Alumalite: This is an aluminum composite material (aluminum alloy composition) that falls right behind ARMOUR-Wood in terms of strength. It is nearly as thick, lighter in weight, and great for durability.

* Dibond: Although the least strong of these possibilities, Dibond is ten times the thickness and strength of a sole sheet of aluminum. A perfect choice for flexibility and sturdiness when you need more than the .083" grade aluminum.

All of these signs require very little maintenance and are made to last. You can fully customize any of these choices to meet your business needs. Not quite certain if you need one of the thicker grades of aluminum or not? Not an issue! One of our highly qualified sign specialists will be pleased to walk you through the selection process and help you choose the proper grade for your metal sign.

Whether or not it's a metal real estate sign or an ARMOUR-Wood billboard to mount on top of your business, you can feel comfortable knowing that your aluminum based signs are tough, sturdy and there for the long haul. And we wouldn't suggest even attempting to smash one of these signs against your head...you'd end up getting quite the awful headache if you did!
